Are You Planning to Transfer to OSU at Some Point in Your College Career?

If you answered yes, it may be helpful to know that many students at The Ohio State University began their college careers at a community college, such as Columbus State.

Similarly:

  • Nearly 40% of all traditional-aged post secondary students start out at community college and are far more likely to transfer to a four year university than their older classmates.
  • Latino students attend community colleges as a first step toward a four-year degree more than traditional-age students of other races and ethnicities.
  • Students from the lowest socioeconomic status (SES) begin their college career in community colleges more often than traditional-age students of higher SES.
  • Full-time community college students who aspire to earn Bachelor’s Degrees are more likely to transfer to a four-year institution than their part-time counterparts (Doyle, 2006).

In 2006 a major study entitled Facilitating Community College Transfers: Part I Institutional Stories published by Eduventures, a collaborative research and consulting firm, showed that with proper academic advice and guidance throughout their transfer process, students tend to graduate from four year colleges, like OSU, at much higher rates. To help with this aim, the Office of Minority Affairs created OSU Bound Program.

OSU Bound at Columbus State

OSU Bound began in 2004 as a pilot program for transfer students from Columbus State Community College. It is designed to increase the enrollment of targeted pre-transfer students. The program provides its students with academic support and monitoring services, in order to help to ensure their success and “smooth transition” to Ohio State.  Although the programs targeted audience is students from Columbus State Community College, the program can assist transfer students from other universities.

University Admission Requirements
Students becomes eligible to transfer to Ohio State by either graduating with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science Degree, or by completing at least 1 year of college (45 credit hours or 30 semester hours). Also, students must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0; However, admission to OSU is made on a competitive basis!

Transfer Students Face Challenging Courses at OSU
Transfer students have reported that many of OSU's courses are more challenging than those they attended while at their community colleges. So, in order to help prepare future students for tougher courses at OSU, they are encouraged to study hard and earn the highest GPA's possible while there. Having higher GPA's will also help improve students chances of being admitted into the colleges of their choice once they transfer to OSU. For example, many colleges at OSU require students to have a 3.0 cumulative GPA before they can be considered for admission.

Program Services
Students attend quarterly educational and support meetings that are designed to help guide them through the transfer process. They receive information about course requirements, important deadlines, and they are exposed and connected to key resources at OSU. Also, their academic progress is monitored.

Do You Qualify for OSU Bound?
If you belong to an underrepresented student population such as African American, Latino/Latina, Appalachian, Native American, Immigrant, or come from an economically disadvantaged background, OSU Bound is designed to help you bridge the gap from your educational institution to OSU!
